Have you heard about the Muzzle Up! Project?
It is a great program focusing on advocacy, education and training through helping dog owners learn about muzzles and how to use them properly.
Muzzles are not for “bad” dogs. They are an essential training tool and can help keep your pet safe in a variety of situations. Dogs might wear a muzzle because:
- They are nervous and it helps to keep everyone safe
- It gives other pet owners a cue that your dog needs a bit of extra space
- They tend to gobble up things they shouldn’t be eating
- Their owner wants to make sure they are comfortable wearing a muzzle in case they ever have a need to do so in the future
Here at Snelgrove Veterinary Services, we often recommend a basket muzzle to our clients for pets that may need them for any of the reasons listed above. A properly fitting basket muzzle can be a great investment towards keeping your dog safe and happy.
Here is a great link on how to train your dog to wear a muzzle. It is not as simple as buying one and sticking it on their face. We want to make sure that your pet is comfortable wearing a muzzle and does not see it as any sort of punishment. The goal is to make sure your dog enjoys wearing their muzzle.
